You can dispose of your used needles at home by simply throwing them into an empty coffee can, or an empty laundry soap container, putting on the cover, and putting that into your waste basket. See other useful ideas for disposing of needles or used, unwanted medication by clicking on Waste Medicine and Sharps Disposal. questions 2. I was bit by a bat when I was cleaning out my attic? What should I do? Wash the affected area thoroughly. Seek medical attention. Save the bat, transport to a Veterinarian, so that the bat can be tested for rabies. If the bat cannot be tested, your Doctor will have to assume that the bat has rabies, and you will have to be vaccinated against rabies. However if the bat can be tested it may be negative for rabies and you will be fine. There is excellent information on bats and rabies on the following websites: www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/rabies www.state.il.us/ www.batcon.org questions 3. I have mold in my apartment and the landlord will not do anything about. What can I do about this? The best thing that you can do is to decrease the moisture in your air by using a dehumidifier, and scrubbing away the mold by using water with bleach and cleansers. If mold is pervasive in drywall or carpet, it might be best to replace those items. The Ogle County Health Dept does not test for mold. That has to be done by certified industrial hygienists, who would be listed under environmental services in the yellow pages. Presently there are no legal standards for what are “acceptable” levels of mold. The Illinois Dept of Public Health also has no authority to enforce the removal of mold. We can consult with landlords or homeowners and make suggestions, but we cannot require your landlord to follow our recommendations.
